Ukraine receives 1.5 billion euros in EU funds: officials – English section

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said in an X-post that he was “Gboy to announce the allocation of a second tranche of EUR 1.5 billion from the Ukraine Facility Exceptional Bridge Financing, further strengthening our economic stability.”

He thanked EUPresident of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen “for its continued support,” adding that “this injection strengthens (Ukraine’s) economic resilience and stability.”

Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko said the EU, which has provided Ukraine with 31 billion euros, has become the largest donor of budget financing to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, Reuters news agency reported.

A day earlier, i.eThe U.S. Senate approved more than $60 billion in new aid for Ukraine and sent a package of bills to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.

“International support is crucial for ensuring macroeconomic stability and laying a foundation for economic growth,” Marchenko said on Wednesday.

First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said the government was looking forward to final approval of the EU-Ukraine Facility loan program worth 50 billion euros and hoped to receive three more tranches this year, according to Reuters.

The EU’s Von der Leyen said on X: “Ukraine carries a heavy burden on its shoulders for all of us. Today we are disbursing a further €1.5 billion under the €50 billion Ukraine Facility. This is crucial to keep the Ukrainian state and services running while the country fights back the aggressor. Europe remains united and determined.”

Earlier this year, EU leaders unanimously agreed to provide €50 billion in new aid to Ukraine.

European Council President Charles Michel praised the decision at the time as a promise of “steadfast, predictable, long-term financing for Ukraine.”

He added that the EU “takes leadership and responsibility in support of Ukraine.”

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
