Russia says ‘negotiable with Gazprom’ on western natural gas price cap

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hwang Cheol-hwan = The Russian government pointed out that the move by the West, mainly the US and Europe, to set an upper limit on the price of Russian natural gas is something that the Russian government should negotiate with its natural gas company, Gazprom.

According to Sputnik news agency on the 28th (local time), Kremlin spokeswoman Dmitry Peskov said during a meeting with reporters on the 28th (local time) that “it depends on the guidelines and it depends on the decision Gazprom will make.”

He said, “They (the West) will probably try to put conditions on existing contracts and price changes, etc. as far as legally permitted. This is something to negotiate,” he said.

In fact, Reuters reported that Peskov declined to comment on the extent of the losses Russia would suffer if the West set a cap on prices of Russian oil and natural gas.

It is known that the heads of state attending the G7 summit to be held on the 26th and 28th in Elmau, Bavaria, Germany, agreed to seek a way to set an upper limit on the price of Russian crude oil.

Reuters reported that price caps for Russian natural gas as well as crude oil will be discussed together.

In this regard, Dana Spinand, a spokeswoman for the European Commission’s executive committee, told reporters on the same day that it was developing a system for setting caps on natural gas supply prices, Sputnik news agency reported.
