Africa Global Logistics launches terminal at Angola’s Lobito port

LOBITO, March 28, 2024 – Africa Global Logistics (AGL) officially launched the activities of its subsidiary AGL Lobito Terminal (ALT) on Wednesday, adding vital capacity to Angola’s strategic Port of Lobito.

The terminal can accommodate large-capacity ships via its 14-metre quay depth and handle more than 1 million tonnes of bulk goods and more than 100,000 teu of containers per year.

The Port of Lobito is a key link in the Lobito Railway Corridor, a developing logistics channel designed to transport minerals – particularly the copper and cobalt needed to manufacture electric vehicles – from inland Africa to Angola’s Atlantic facilities.

AGL plans EUR 100 million in investment to increase the attractiveness of the terminal and to contribute to the economic and social development of the region.

ALT’s launch ceremony was presided over by Minister of Transport Hon. Dr. Ricardo Viegas de Abreu and attended by AGL president Philippe Labonne and officials from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the logistics and port operations player said.

AGL is an Africa-focused multimodal logistics operator that is part of shipping and logistics company MSC Group. It has a network including 250 logistics and maritime agencies, 22 port and rail concessions, 66 dry ports and two river terminals and more than 100 years of activities under its belt.

“The Lobito terminal validates our strategy aimed at improving living conditions and promoting economic competitiveness through robust and multimodal logistics solutions that meet Africa’s challenges,” Labonne said.

“Our operations on the Lobito Corridor will be essential to facilitate market access and support industries essential to the global economy, especially in the context of the transition to renewable energy sources.”
