It's on the roadmap for 2023, with announcement expected at CES (January). Given the lacklustre sales of Ryzen 7000, that's likely to happen without any delays.
Certainly makes sense in light of Intel's offerings.

13600k will beat the pants off this for productivity workloads, but yeh mobos are more expensive and also this is likely end of the line for 1700cpu family just like AM4.
You also get a slight drop in performance if you use ddr4 VS ddr5 on the intels so if you want to go ddr5 it's a bit extra there too.
Unfortunately with the next level stupid motherboard pricing for AMD AM5, it means this CPU is still relevant for gaming builds, even if your doing a new build.

Hopefully AMD can work on lowering the prices of these 3D cache variant chips in the future, even if it comes in the form of a 7600X3D in the future, I couldn't care too much about having more than 6 cores currently, and the X800 CPU's are already expensive enough without throwing that 3D cache upcharge on top.

Good for $350
Not sure why this CPU is so popular at $500+, there is barely any performance gain over say, the 5600X at 1440p and above. Much better off going for the 5900X at a lower price and get 50% more cores
are you thinking of the 5800x (non-3d) instead?
3D V-Cache can absolutely make huge differences at 1440p and above - it's just entirely game dependent (and also how much overhead you have on your GPU).
Games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Borderlands 3, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Factorio, Stellaris, and a bunch of different MMOs all benefit hugely from having all this cache.
I'm very happy with the extra performance in games I play vs having the extra cores of a 5900X for example - I don't need more than 8 cores, as I found out with my old 3900X.

You must be confused with the non-3d chip. This definitely has improvements over the 5600X. I own a 5600X and am bottlenecked at 1440p with a 3080, struggling to maintain a consistent 120+ fps in a few games where a 5800X3D will do it with ease.
Interesting, i wouldn't have that that was the case. I am running a Zen 1 1700 with a 3070. I just saw last night my mobo has a new bios so i can upgrade to the 5xxx series. Any thoughts between this or the ~$200 cheaper 5700x for gaming(1440p)/vr?
Similar to my experience - I only game in MSFS, and I have a 5600X and a 2080 Super running at 1440p but it does sometimes struggle. I'm waiting for the 5800X3D to drop below $500 before I pull the trigger.
Same waiting for it to drop below $500 not in a rush the 3700x is still killing it.
Well, there are some tasks that are set-and-forget where the 5900x will be noticeably faster and the cores make a difference. But for games - especially certain kinds of games, ones where you have only a few threads smashing a lot of memory to present the next frame - the vcache absolutely smashes that stuff. It reminds me of the early Pentium 2 / 3 days where suddenly a bunch of programs essentially fit everything they did inside 512kb l2 cache and were ridiculously faster.
96mb of l3 doesn't quite do that these days, but the big massive improvement is in 0.1/1% lows that produce stutter and high frame times. In those games, even though technically the 5900/5950 might have more fast cache, it can't actually be brought to bear on the sticking points that slow the next frame, because it's divided up over more cores.

Honest question about the 5800X3D. The 13600K is the same price, wouldn't that be better?
Yes 100% Intel is better. The choice really depends on if you have an existing AMD build or looking for a new build.
New build definitely go with Intel as there is flexibility with motherboard options (Intel 12th and 13th gen compatible) and choice of DDR4 or DDR5 ram.

Agreed. For the huge number of people with existing older Ryzen systems, this is a drop-in $550 upgrade.
The i5 would cost $200 more minimum for a board, assuming you reuse the memory.
If you're buying new, I wouldn't invest in old infrastructure. AMD need to get some cheaper boards out ASAP, as that's smashing them on price/performance.
Yeah, I'm about to buy a new config and was wondering if that was a good choice. I'm inclined to go Intel and 13600k because an AM5 config is a lot more expensive because of motherboards.
Will reuse my RX6800XT but will probably go DDR5 and give my current config to someone else in my house.

I bought one of these for $609 + ~$23 express shipping on 29/9 (from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/727525) but even though it showed as in stock when I bought it, I somehow missed out and was told it was backordered. It wasn't actually dispatched until 10/10 and I didn't receive it until the 14/10. I can't see anything on PLE's FAQ about it, but does anyone know if they do price difference refunds or anything like that?
