[Newegg] ASRock B450M Steel Legend AM4 AMD Motherboard - $94.99 / $64.99 (after MIR)

Sub $100 for an AM4 Platform motherboard even before the MIR, and only $65 if you want to jump through the MIR hoops.

Couple of cons......

$7.99 shipping

Older chipset so it's only Gen 3 NVMe, and it's a weird design that only has a single NVMe M.2 with the second M.2 being Sata only.

Other than that... pretty hard to beat the price if you're looking at a budget build with AM4 + DDR4 Ram.

Shell Shocker sale with 17 hours left at time of post.

it's a great little motherboard to pair with a 5600G for a budget build

I've assembled 2 5600G builds with Asrock boards with no issues. Got my rebates too!

Yes, the Ryzen 5 5600X is an AM4 socket processor, and this motherboard is AM4

Yes, but you will also need a video card, if you were planning for a budget build.

Same here. I bought the same B450 board last year. Also a B650M a few weeks back. Rebates took a while, but arrived eventually.

Been using this board since 2019 w/ my 3600x... It's still trucking along with my 5800x.

Iirc AsRock’s mobos go on a rotation of “discounts” on Newegg. Still a good deal for a budget build nevertheless.

As mentioned above NVMe SSD is limited to PCIe 3.0. B450 chipset’s PCIe is limited to gen 2. Not much of a limitation for casual use anyway.

With that said, all hinges on whether you have or need a GPU, and if you can get a CPU for cheap. If a late stage AM4 is good for 3+ years I think AM5 can be omitted.

Not sure if this mobo ship with bios compatible with the X3Ds however.

This might be the budget build I was looking for...

Can someone please do a quick breakdown for me on what CPU, memory and GPU I should also purchase for longevity and reliability? I plan to re-use my decade old case (Fractal Design ARC Midi), power supply (Corsair HX 750), hard drives, and peripherals.

Just be aware of the MIR, you have 10 days from the "invoice date" (the date you bought it) to submit everything. So if you live on the west coast, you may have less than a day to install and test everything. So I would perhaps count out the MIR portion of it. In the fineprint, you can send them the tracking info if you receive it after the deadline, but it's kind of a pain IMHO.

What is the difference between this one and a B550M motherboard (also compatible with AM4) for around 140$? (New to this, building my first PC).

I went from a Phenom II 955 X4 with an HD4890 to this AsRock B450M board with a second hand 3200G (Integrated Graphics) and 16 GB of cheap Team Group 3200MHZ ram. I picked up a RX 570 later cheap as well.

I reused an older power supply, hard drives, case, etc. too.

I did have to RMA the board at one point though. It has a flaw where the USB ports will short out and become defective.

If you live in Toronto, it's rather easy to RMA the board as you can hand deliver it to a little hole in the wall in Markham that deals with ASRock.

The main difference between 450 and 550 chipsets is PCIe version. You wouldn't notice a difference between them on a budget build.

To add to sswilson's post, you probably also don't want to run a 5900x on this board.

Just mentioning in case you got one of the faster processors on sale lately.

Pretty sure the PCIe is gen 3.

On a separate for straight graphics gen 3 is good for upto a 3080 without seeing any real bottlenecking

Oh noes! I'm currently running a new 5900X on a old B450 mobo Smiling Face With Open Mouth And Cold Sweat. Time for me to upgrade to a new board, I should have enough spare parts to make a second desktop.

I think a lot of people are going for the 5600 these days because it is the cheapest of the last gen. GPU just kind of depends. No sense getting something like an Nvidia 4090 to pair with a 5600. I kind of feel like, with anything middle of the road it will be good for most people
